Competency based assessment is the process the Vocational Education & Training (VET) sector uses to assess students. To achieve a qualificationyou must provide evidence that you meet the competency standard for each unit. Competence means you have the skill and knowledge to correctly carry out a task, a skill or a function to the required standard. This includes the ability to apply the required skills, knowledge and attributes in a workplace context (known as employability skills).
Competency based assessment involves collecting and judging evidence in order to decide whether a person has achieved a competency. Your coach will review your evidence against the course competency standards and assess your performance as either ‘Competent’ or ‘Not Yet Competent’ for each individual unit.
- Competent = you have achieved the required competency standard and are entitled to a statement of attainment for the unit/s of competency assessed.
- Not Yet Competent = indicates that some aspect/s of the competency standard have not been demonstrated at that point in time. ‘Not Yet Competent’ is not considered a fail. Your coach will provide feedback, and you will have the opportunity to apply the feedback and submit further evidence to demonstrate competency. Our intent is to support and guide you until you achieve competency.
You have the right to appeal if you disagree with your assessment result. Please refer to our Policies and Procedures for our appeals process.
